Owen Matherly, LCSW

In sessions my goal is to help clients feel safe enough to slow down, and observe their ingrained patterns. I encourage clients to develop respect and compassion for these patterns, recognizing when and how they served a necessary protective function. I help clients establish realistic boundaries and goals so that growth and change are sustainable. I view things from a systemic standpoint, meaning family of origin, friends, community, and larger social contexts are all vital considerations as we explore sources of both relational injury and repair. I know that a trusting therapeutic relationship is rooted in warm non-judgmental company, empathic exploration, thoughtful challenges, and informed, practical guidance. No matter the circumstances that bring a client to therapy, I do my best to ensure they are met with honesty, respect and understanding.
Population:I specialize in working with the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly transgender people. I meet with adults (18+) only. I only conduct individual sessions, I do not work with couples or families. The most common diagnoses I work with are PTSD, C-PTSD, Depressive Disorders, and Anxiety Disorders. My clients often seek to explore and find relief from chronic dissociation, codependency, fawning, avoidance, isolation, over-functioning, hypervigilance, and/or rumination.

Approaches:My approach centers safety, process, depth and accompaniment. I incorporate ideas from multiple modalities, including Humanistic, Relational, Psychodynamic, IFS/Parts work, Trauma- & Neurodivergent-informed CBT, DBT and ACT. I incorporate psychoeducation and skills-based interventions when appropriate, especially if you specifically request that kind of support. In our first few sessions we’ll collaborate on the approach that best suits your needs and goals in therapy to ensure that we are well suited. My approach is purposeful and grounded in evidence-based practice, I understand that perpetual exploration without direction is unhelpful. However, clients seeking highly structured, skills-based, short-term, or solution-focused therapy will likely find a better fit with a different provider.

Credentials: I graduated from my MSW program in 2022 and have worked full time as a clinician since. I am fully licensed in Oregon and Utah. I engage in continuing education in areas such as trauma, suicidality, ADHD, ASD, cultural competency/humility, and transgender-informed care. My license number is L15362.
